McNally House

Opened in March 2020, Alzheimer’s Queensland’s bespoke residential facility, McNally House, Upper Mount Gravatt, Brisbane, combines cutting-edge design principles with an enviable lifestyle for those requiring high level dementia care, aged care and access to our wellness programs. McNally House is a home and not a facility.
The vision of current and longstanding Alzheimer’s Queensland Chief Executive Officer, Stephen McNally, who has served our organisation with distinction for the past 25 years, McNally House strives to set a new standard in dementia and aged care accommodation and service delivery.
McNally House comprises four levels, three of which are dedicated to residential accommodation, and the fourth to a state-of-the-art gymnasium and wellness centre.

The first three levels of McNally House, each of which accommodate up to 13 residents per level, serves a unique purpose, and as such, operates independently. The levels include:

Ground – home to our Specialist Dementia Care Program (SDCP) providing a higher level of care for those exhibiting very severe behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia, who are unable to be effectively cared for by traditional aged care services. For more information about this unique program, head here.

Levels 1 & 2 – provide high level care to our residents, offering single or couples accommodation designed to maximise privacy and comfort. Each level houses a fully functioning kitchen, ample relaxation and communal areas, and beautiful outdoor spaces.

Level 3 – houses a state-of-the-art gymnasium and outdoor area for use by our residents and wellness program participants. Our individually-customised programs delivered on level 3 are designed and delivered by our dedicated allied healthcare practitioners.

Our specialist McNally House staff, value, and cater to the specific needs of each of our residents, by adopting a  person-centred and goal-oriented philosophy and approach to care that builds upon, or further consolidates, each individual’s strengths and capabilities. With a focus on promoting dignity, independence, self-esteem and the ability and encouragement to contribute to all aspects of their daily lives, McNally House adds benefits that are immeasurable.

Our unique lifestyle programs offered at McNally House is embedded in our care and service delivery, to enable our residents to maximise this important phase of their lives.

Staff are resident focused and not task focused, people will always come first.  Staff are aware of each residents differing needs, varied interests and understand that caring for someone encompasses spiritual and emotional needs and not just about care needs. Our care and lifestyle staff build and develop respectful and caring relationships with those they care for and are empowered to work collaboratively with residents to lead valued and engaged lives.

We have a Registered Nurse on site 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Furthermore, each resident’s clinical needs are supported by a full suite of allied healthcare professionals, including Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, a Dietician, Speech Pathologist, Music Therapist, and more.

Bathed in natural sunlight from over-sized windows, McNally House seamlessly connects internal spaces with beautifully appointed external courtyards and entertainment areas. Each level has been designed in adherence with our AQ philosophy of promoting choice, minimising confusion, protecting residents competencies and maximising the independence of our residents. The interior design and choice of colours, lighting, textures and furnishings featuring on level 1 reference a more traditional style, while level 2 features a more eclectic aesthetic.

All four levels of McNally House feature an intimate living room within close proximity to all bedrooms. Every living space offers our residents a sense of ownership and personalisation, and their families an opportunity to spend time with/entertain their loved ones. Each level comprises a domestic-style kitchen to encourage residents to participate in food preparation, as part of our lifestyle program, involving cooking and baking activities. Resident meals are both prepared and consumed in the communal kitchen area on each level.

All bedrooms are spacious and cater for residents with high care needs, including discreet, built-in ceiling mount hoists, German-designed medical beds and nurse call. Each bedroom features screened, louvred windows and doors that spill onto a personal Juliette balcony, offering our residents fresh air and abundant natural light.

Access to McNally House is by coded door entry or swipe cards, while all communal areas are equipped with CCTV, allowing our residents to relax and enjoy the comfort of their surrounds, in utmost privacy and safety.
